Who has recently
selected Mymensingh Medical College for piloting
feasibility study on Problem- based Learning
(PBL). An intervention study was carried out
in Mymensingh Medical College, between December
2002 to November 2003, to select priority health
problems in Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry
and Skin & VD, to prepare learning module
formats and tutor guides, to arrange integrated
small group tutorials, to determine knowledge
and attitude of faculty members (before and
after exposure to symposium focused on PBL)
and clinical students on PBL (before and after
exposure to a PBL course) and also to list the
constraints which will be encountered during
the conduction of PBL classes.
The outcome
of the piloting PBL includes the following:
· Faculty members learned how to implement
PBL and realised that Problem Based Learning
is more effective than traditional teaching
in enabling students to address local health
problem (60 % before and 93% after).
· The acceptance of Problem-Based Learning
by students has been enhanced (72 % 81 % after)
are recommending the incorporation of Problem-Based
Learning methods in the undergraduate medical
curriculum.

National
Disease Surveillance Centre becomes
functional with WHO assistance
|
| |
|
WHO provided
technical and financial support to the
DGHS in establishing the much needed National
Disease Surveillance Centre (NDSC) at
the Institute of epidemiology, Disease
Control and Research (IEDCR) with a view
to strengthening communicable and non-communicable
surveillance from the field level up to
the central level. There is now a keen
interested to increase the capacity of
IEDCR in carrying our epidemiological
surveillance of communicable diseases
with laboratory support integrated with
non-communicable diseases.
Effective
communicable and non-communicable disease
control depends on effective surveillance
and response system. Information on priority
communicable and non-communicable diseases
is a key part of public health decision-making
in the country. The National Disease Surveillance
Centre (NDSC) is a component of the National
Diseases Surveillance Programme (NDSP).
